Muay Thai for Mental Health

March 11, 2024|Gym, Mental Health, Muay Thai, Recommendations, Tips, Youth Muay Thai

You've probably heard all about the mental health advantages of exercise. From reduced anxiety and depression levels to more "feel-good" chemicals in the brain to better sleep, the benefits are seemingly endless. If you've ever experienced runner's high, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.

Naturally, Muay Thai, a form of exercise, has similar benefits. Based on my experience, however, I would argue that Muay Thai's effect on mental health surpasses that of typical exercise like running or lifting weights.

Emotional release

Maybe the most obvious of all of Muay Thai's benefits is the emotional release you get from hitting things. It might sound cliché (and probably is), but punching and kicking a heavy bag after a rough day is a great way to release anger and stress. For a lot of people, channeling those negative emotions in a controlled environment like the Muay Thai gym is invaluable for mental health.

Self-confidence

I can tell you one thing for certain: Muay Thai is not easy. You might think that the mental push necessary to hit hard, take punches to the face, and do challenging conditioning exercises would be exhausting and maybe even detrimental to mental health. In practice, I have found that the feeling of achievement and empowerment after doing hard things actually improves my mental health. In other aspects of my life, I feel strong, confident, and unbeatable: if I can win a sparring round against someone stronger than me or push extra through some tough conditioning, I can do anything!

Mindfulness

In the same sense, the difficulty of Muay Thai forces your brain to focus on nothing but the present. It doesn't matter what's on your mind — school, work, family, etc. — you cannot dwell on any of it while training. As a chronic overthinker, the mindfulness practice that Muay Thai provides is by far the best mental benefit for me. When I'm at the gym, it's like the stresses of life don't exist.

Sense of community

Through Muay Thai, I've met some incredible people, most of whom I would have never encountered otherwise. I look forward to training every day, not just because I love the sport, but also because I get to spend time with a vibrant community of people that I love being around. Whether you're training together or cheering each other on during a fight, the shared experiences strengthen bonds and provide a network of encouragement through the highs of lows of Muay Thai.

Even more, I have personally found inspiration in the tales and aspirations of my teammates and coaches that motivate me to push through my own battles — mental or physical, Muay Thai or not. For me, being around amazing people pushes me to be the best version of myself.

Conclusion

Whether or not you discover the same things I have, I guarantee that Muay Thai will improve your mental health in some way regardless of the level you pursue. Maybe you'll feel the same way I do about mindfulness and the community at the gym, or maybe you'll find some other benefit through the sport that I didn't mention.

There's only one way to find out, though, and that's by trying it out! If you're in the Washington, D.C. area, come check us out at Atlas Muay Thai Gym in Old Town, Virginia.
